2018 Building Excellence Awards
The annual Master Builders SA Building Excellence Awards is a time to celebrate and enjoy all of the positive aspects and achievements of our vibrant industry. It's a time to acknowledge some of the most outstanding accomplishments and recognise world class building projects. It's also a highly entertaining evening, and next week's Building Excellence Awards promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

For the first time in its 20-plus-year history, the event is a sell out with close to 1300 industry delegates and representatives attending. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued outstanding support for the South Australian building and construction industry's "night of nights".

Next Friday at the Adelaide Convention Centre guests will enjoy a night of fantastic entertainment, headlined by MC Sam Newman and Cosentino The Grand Illusionist. The Awards will also be televised on Building Ideas on Channel Nine on Saturday 22 September at 4:30pm.

Tickets were posted to attendees this week so expect them to arrive any day now! We look forward to celebrating with you and best of luck to all entrants.
Standing up for members on smart meter bungle
Master Builders SA has been lobbying furiously to fix a bungled government program that is causing delays of up to to 16 weeks for new electricity "smart meter" installations for new homes.

Under the "Power of Choice" program, in December last year responsibility was moved from electricity distribution companies to retailers. The resulting blowout in waiting times for new and replacement meters has left tens of thousands of families, builders and subcontractors frustrated, suffering financial hardship and in some cases even homeless.

After numerous complaints, Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg submitted a rule-change request to the Australian Energy Market Commission in March that would ensure meters were installed within six business days, as was previously the case. However, with a draft determination not due until 20 September and expected completion by mid-December, the wheels of government are moving far too slowly for the many people who are suffering on the ground.

Retailers have shown they can't be trusted. Unless there is immediate action, there will continue to be a ripple effect through the entire South Australian economy. A six day time limit for installations with significant penalties for non-compliance must be introduced immediately. Furthermore, builders' electricians, who are qualified tradespeople, should be given the authority by the energy retailers immediately to install meters and let families move into their own homes.

This problem was completely unnecessary, but the solution is simple. All it takes is our politicians to stand up for South Australian consumers and small businesses.
