CEO UPDATE
CEO UPDATE
After a week of frenzied media coverage, it has just been revealed that Scott Morrison is the new Prime Minister of Australia. The lack of unity from both sides of politics over the past eight years has been an unedifying spectacle, and an unwelcome distraction from matters of substance. A revolving door of leadership will not help deliver a prosperous building and construction industry and economy. Quite frankly, it's high time our politicians stopped focusing on themselves and got on with the job they were elected to do.

On a more positive note, this year's Building Excellence Awards was our biggest ever! With 1300 people packing the Adelaide Convention Centre on Friday night, it was an outstanding celebration of the fantastic achievements of South Australia's building and construction industry.

The standard of entrants was incredibly high, and it was terrific to see all your talent, innovation and hard work recognised. Our website has been updated so you can check out all the photos, winners and projects here. I hope to see you all there next year!

Wall bracing compliance and termite protection overview
Friday 7 September, 2pm to 4pm, Gawler Sports and Recreation Centre, Nixon Terrace Gawler.

In August 2016 a 17 year-old apprentice was tragically killed when he was struck by a falling wall frame at a residential building site in Fullarton. The South Australian Employment Court has recently handed down its penalty decision. The case highlighted some glaring inadequacies in the timber framing code in conjunction with work, health and safety practices. Our seminar will analyse the case and cover who are the officers responsible under the WHS Act, requirements under the timber framing code and accepted industry practices for timber wall frame installation (temporary bracing). the importance of safe work systems for employers, and incident response and legal professional privilege.

We will also be highlighting how to effectively provide termite protection for new builds.

Professional insurance for building surveyors
As a result of the Grenfell Tower fire, Building Surveyors have been hit with higher premiums on their professional indemnity insurance. In conjunction with exorbitant costs, insurance companies are placing larger restrictions on the use of Aluminium Composite Panels (ACPs), including placing conditions of exclusion for cover on that product (both pre and post approval). This is driving up market costs for obtaining development approvals. Various bodies, including the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors, have taken a strong stance on the issue and lobbied the Federal Government to inquire into the subject. This position includes

1. Not support exclusions on insurance covers for ACPs

2. Providing a viable solution for the future

3. Supporting a national Professional Standards Scheme (PSS) for building surveyors.

4. A government funding model for the rectification of non-compliant external cladding to give confidence to insurers and encourage them to resume offering exclusion free PI policies.

5. Cladding Taskforces align their approaches and work cooperatively to support a commonly agreed nationally consistent outcome.

Considering state and national policies are currently being drafted as a result of the 24 recommendations outlined in the Shergold Weir Report, any future decisions taken by government should also consider the volatility of the insurance market.
