A proposed crime of "assaulting, intimidating or threatening" to obtain payment for a building contract is not just about builders - everyone in the industry is at risk.

The Advertiser has outlined proposed changes to the Building Industry (Security of Payment) Act including a new crime punishable by fines of up to $250,000 or two years' in prison (article available to subscribers here).

The article says the crime will apply to "unscrupulous builders" but the reality is it will apply to everyone in the industry - builders, subcontractors, sub-subcontractors and even unions and workers.

Master Builders SA has clarified this in a letter to the editor published today ("Jailing for all", available here).
